Earth, Wind & Fire

Brigade Gallery, Copenhagen, DK

Throughout history humankind has grappled with the fundamental questions of our existence; who are we; where did we come from, how should a life be lived; and where are we going? From animists to polytheists and monotheist, humans have always looked for answers within the context of our social groups, often referring to external spirits or divine entities to explain or validate our common principles and understandings.
In her practice Berenike Corcuera continues this fundamental exploration of the human spirit and soul. Answers to spiritual questions are still sought in the realm of the divine, but in a divinity that exists only as a sanctity within each of us. Corcuera believes that in contemporary spirituality, our collective consciousness has moved away from traditional concepts and personas of religion and is no longer bound to any specific dogma, but rather to a bigger realm of exploration and research.

Corcuera views the divine as a uniquely personal understanding rather than a series of common certainties applied generically to everyone. In Corcuera's spiritual world the personal and collective consciousness moves towards intuition and creativity and away from any authoritative principles. Human existence must be interpreted as a journey of changing states rather than a series of events set within a static condition.

In her first exhibition with Brigade, Corcuera engages with questions of spirituality and diasporic narratives through a series of large-scale appliqué works. The colourful works depict her own spiritual journey, from the syncretism of indigenous spirituality and catholic religious structures of Peru, to her move to Europe and later search for identity and belonging in western contemporary spirituality. Presented as a cycle of life, the spiritual journey takes us through the different states of the human existence, with each state represented by one of the four classical elements - earth, air, fire, and water - referencing both ancient explanations of nature and matter common to many cultures in general, and her Peruvian ancestors' religious beliefs in particular.

Corcuera has an educational background in fashion textile-print from Central Saint Martin's College of Art & Design in London (2019) and in menswear from Institut Francais de la Mode in Paris (2020). She since learned her craftmanship from fashion design studios such as Versace, The Row and Bernhard Willhelm, before deciding to pursue her artistic practice. Using as her vantage point the craftmanship and knowledge gained from the world of fashion, Corcuera's explorations are manifested through a series of large-scale appliqué works that shift playfully between the hopeful, the nostalgic and the inquisitive.

Splendid Silent Sun
Market Art Fair, Vällingby Centrum, Stockholm, SE

Market Art Fair is pleased to present the exhibition Splendid Silent Sun in collaboration with NREP and curators Elias Kautsky and Anne Vigeland.

Until the early 1950s, Vällingby was rather unknown to the world. A few farms and cottages lay scattered here, inhabited by a modest population. Early settlements gave rise to the name as we know it – they were “the people on the hill” (“folket på vallen”), which then became “Vällingarnas by”. When Vällingby Centrum opened in 1954 it became a world-famous destination due to the utopic and celebrated urban model of the “ABC city”. Vällingby’s transformation, and the ways it can be understood as a specific place within a vast universe, serves as the starting point for the exhibition Splendid Silent Sun, whose title is taken from a poem by American poet Walt Whitman. Originally published in 1865, Give me the Splendid Silent Sun demonstrates a contradictory relationship to nature common to the aftermaths of the industrial revolution. The sun is celebrated for its life-giving forces, but also portrayed as indifferent to the advancements of humankind. This view on the sun’s silent splendidness is perhaps even more telling of our current times, as the sun’s ignorance towards our actions threatens to extinct us.

The indifference of the sun and sky towards earthly life is rarely mutual. Since prehistoric times, people have directed their attention towards celestial bodies, even if the relationship to them has varied depending on geographic, religious, scientific, and cultural conditions and beliefs. In Lisa Tan’s video My Pictures of You, images of Mars are seen as a death mask of earth, and as such become an afterimage of our current times. Karolina Brobäck is interested in the limits and specificities of perception, explored through spherical forms that at the same time resemble immense planets and microscopic particles. Berenike Corcuera takes on a more personal relationship to heaven and earth in four textile works inspired by astrological readings of sites and geographic routes collected from her own history and upbringing.

The connections between the sun and Vällingby become concrete in Sven Holmström and Ole Berg’s gigantic Sundial which has been included in a geographic extension of the exhibition. In certain ways, the windows in Johan Thurfjell’s varnish paintings function as sundials too, but with an added poetic dimension connected to the home and everyday life. The repetitive slowness of everyday life is present also in A K Dolven’s video work from the empty sky – unexpectedly cut off by subtle shifts in mood and landscape.

In parallel to Thurfjell’s charcoal drawings Findlinge/Foundlings – which considers the very early impulses to create art – Tilda Lovell’s public artwork Flora and Fauna returns to a Christian idea of origin. The work, which is permanently installed in Solursgaraget, is inspired by parts of Hieronymous Bosch’s depiction of the Garden of Eden, prior to the Fall. The decisive moment – the temptation to bite the apple – makes itself known in Paul- Robin Sjöström’s ceramic sculpture Just One Bite. Despite the worrying facets of several of Sjöström’s works, it is possible to find comfort in the thought that Nothing Lasts Forever, Not Even Stars.

Splendid Silent Sun is an invitation to be in Vällingby and for a moment think of it as the centre of the universe, in order to reconsider our surroundings and presence on earth. Existential thoughts concerning the passing of time and the premises of life are juxtaposed with personal contemplation and barely noticeable shifts of spirit. The exhibition gallery is situated in the middle of Vällingby centrum, merging together with the surrounding bustle of everyday life, which began with the decision of “Vällingarna” to settle here and hence become the people on the hill.

Hosting

Cocooning Mood
Talk CEC, Brussels, BEImmerse yourself in a unique experience where art and design interact in an immersive exhibition. Here, woollen carpets inspired by the masterpieces of famous painters rub shoulders with installations fashioned from enveloping materials and digital creations inviting contemplation and touch. The cocooning spaces, veritable havens of softness, extend this sensory exploration, transforming every moment into an invitation for well-being and reflection. True to our DNA, this exhibition offers a rich dialogue between disciplines. A selection of digital artists and projections will enrich the experience. By crossing disciplines and media, this exhibition questions our relationship with art, space and ourselves, and how art finds new life in our everyday lives.

Philosophically, it invites us to meditate on our need for anchoring, warmth and beauty in a world often marked by coldness and speed. How can art, when fused with design, become an emotional refuge? And what does it mean to inhabit a space where the useful also becomes contemplative?
This exhibition is a celebration of the harmony between shapes, textures and ideas, and an exploration of the boundaries between the functional and the aesthetic. An invitation to let yourself be enveloped, both physically and spiritually.

Van der Plas Gallery, New York City, USA“Light is a thing that cannot be reproduced, but must be represented by something else - by color.’’ – Paul Cezanne

The light I see is not just a physical phenomenon; it's the essence of how we understand and interpret the world. Light can stir visceral emotion and feeling that demands attention, and as Paul Cézanne observed, it can be translated, embodied, and evoked through color. This exhibition explores the ways in which artists harness the interplay of hue, tone, and contrast to capture the essence of light.
Through a diverse collection of works, All The Light I See invites viewers to experience the sensation of light not as a direct replication, but as an interpretation—one shaped by pigment, perspective, and emotion. Here, light is not merely seen; it is felt.

Mundus Imaginalis
Zinnema, Bruxelles, BE

Berenike Corcuera (1994, Lima, Peru) is a German-Peruvian visual artist whose work is as grounded in the rich textiles heritage of handcraft techniques such as embroidery and appliqué, as it is in contemporary explorations of diasporic narratives, consciousness and identity.
Her exhibitions across Europe and internationally have positioned her as a voice attuned to textile’s capacity for both intimacy and collectivity, often framing the act of handcrafting itself as a ritual of presence and encounter. She explores questions of belonging, spiritual inheritance and resistance and the politics of material. Her large-scale textile works function as meditations on land, identity and transgenerational memory. She draws from cosmologies of her Andean-Amazonian roots and her third culture upbringing as well as decolonial practices. Through fiber, she engages with material as both a sacred, meditative medium and a political tool. Berenike has presented solo exhibitions at Brigade Gallery Copenhagen (DK) and Zinnema (BE) and has participated in institutional group shows at Centrale for Contemporary Art Brussels (BE), Market Art Fair Stockholm (SE), Van der Plas Gallery New York City (USA) and La Manufacture Museum of Textile Memory & Creation (FR).
